Greetings from Carolyn and Rick

December 2022

Happy Holidays! We (well, most of us) completed our move from North Carolina to Ohio in April and everyone (meaning the cats) has gotten accustomed to their new surroundings. All work on the first floor of the house was completed within a few days of the move. Work continues on finishing the basement and eventually we will be updating the second floor also. A new patio was installed in the front of the house and we were able to use it a little before the weather turned cold. But it will be waiting for us next Spring and we're looking forward to getting a lot of use out of it.

Carolyn has been living in the apartment we rented in Charlotte since April. It's within walking distance of the campus, so she has no commute! She has made three trips to Ohio for extended stays during the summer. This allowed us to visit family and friends, take advantage of living in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and do plenty of bird watching. Now with school in session, being away from campus is less of an option. Rick spent a week in September in Charlotte and Carolyn came up North for Halloween and Thanksgiving, and is in Ohio right now for the Christmas/New Year holidays.

As many of you know, we are trying to visit all of the National Parks in the US. It's a great incentive to visit places we might not ever go to otherwise. COVID and the move prevented us from making much progress on our goal but we were able to squeeze in a visit to the New River Gorge National Park in West Virginia over the Labor Day weekend. New River is a relatively new National Park located near Beckley, West Virginia. Carolyn drove up from Charlotte and I drove down from Akron. We had a great visit to the park and took the opportunity to exchange items that either should have stayed in Charlotte or should have moved to Akron.

While Rick was in Charlotte we made an overnight trip to Greenville, SC. Lots of people had recommended Greenville as a very walkable small city and that's exactly what we found. Lots of shops and restaurants along Main Street. The photo at the top of the page was taken at the Falls Park on the Reedy River. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth spending a few hours exploring. We're looking forward to more travel in 2023!

One sad note from 2022 was saying goodbye to our sweet kitty Remy. Remy and his siblings have been with us since they were kittens 12 years ago. We all really miss Remy. He was the linchpin for the whole cat family, being strongly bonded to his twin Romy, his sister Cassie, and his other brother Leo. Remy was bright, playful, curious, and very affectionate. He’s gone too soon.

We wish you all health and safe holiday travels! We hope to get to see each of every one of you before too much more time passes.
